piplupcommander: alma ellsworth being unfairly pretty (alma)

I want to talk about my blog title, "thanks for letting me talk about taps", because I want to talk about it all the time, because "C'est la Moon" is a great song and the album it's on is great

The song is an extended mental health metaphor comparing plumbing that doesn't work right all the time ("the hot water takes time to run hot, and the cold starts off warm") to mental processes that don't always fire correctly.

"[...]the plumbing has a lot going on
and a rich inner life
and extends into rooms it wasn't built for
showers, taps, washing machines, and a system
so I've got to learn not to blame it when output is inconsistent"

which is (to my mind) basically saying "give yourself slack when you know you've got too much going on, because you know what your mental plumbing is like and how it works (or doesn't)". Which is a reminder I very much need sometimes!! All the time, honestly.

"And I've got to learn to listen to the pipes
And hear when the things they tell themselves are not so nice"

We've kind of abandoned the metaphor at this point BUT "your brain will say mean things and you have to recognize when it's a real thought or just your brain being mean". Also a skill I've had to learn in the 16ish years since my brain gremlins moved it. (I think I'm better at this one. Mostly.)

"When I see how it's assembled
I reckon I'll be able to cope
And I guess that I'm about ready to settle for that"

There's a power in naming the beast that's plaguing you, so that you can fight it, and knowing where to hit it. And you don't always win! Sometimes you just wound it for a little bit, or come to a reluctant truce.

"So thanks for letting me talk about taps."

This is the last song on an album almost entirely about mental health, and anxiety, and dealing with it (there's a song called "Don't Wait Until 2016 To Try Therapy" that is also great), and - to me at least - this line was basically "thanks for listening to this whole album about my mental health and how I deal with it (apparently by making albums about it)". And seeing as how I absolutely cannot shut up on social media about my brain gremlins and how loud they can get and when they're actively impeding my life...it resonates.

So, for all the times I've already done it and for when I will inevitably do it in the future: thanks for letting me talk about taps.
